Outriders is Free to Play on Steam Until Thursday

Finding a good looter-shooter is difficult, owing to the fact that many of them don’t stay long. If you’re looking for something different, Outriders might be the answer.

People Can Fly is providing Outriders a free trial on PC from June 20 to June 23, 2022, in advance of the Worldslayer expansion’s release. According to HowLongToBeat, the campaign takes about 15 hours to complete. So, theoretically, you could go through all of Outriders in that time frame. For someone with a day job, that’s definitely a short turnaround, but it’s worth a shot. Outriders are on sale for $21.99 on Steam if it appeals to you.

When Outriders was released in April of 2021, critics gave it mostly positive reviews. The PC version currently has a Metacritic score of 73. The main battle loop appears to be exciting enough, albeit it isn’t groundbreaking. However, the common consensus is that the game has improved since its first release.

Outriders will be completely free to play on Steam from June 20 to June 23. The campaign is said to take roughly 15 hours to finish, while it will likely take closer to 30 hours if players take their time exploring and completing additional content including side quests, bounties, and hunts. However, a three-day window to play the game without restrictions should be sufficient for gamers to sample much of the game’s content beyond the free demo. The Outriders demo can be played indefinitely, however the material is confined to the prologue and first chapter, and reaching level 7 takes roughly three hours.

Outriders’ impending Worldslayer DLC is being promoted during this free play time. Outriders’ first expansion, Worldslayer, will include a standalone campaign as well as new foes and places to explore. New Legendary Armor sets will be introduced in Worldslayer, some of which will be equippable by all four classes. A new PAX tree structure, with a different skill tree for each class, is also included in Worldslayer. This tree will employ PAX points to activate nodes from two separate branches, allowing players to create hybrid builds or specialize their characters further.

Outriders is undergoing something of a comeback following its troubled debut, with the massive New Horizon update adding a slew of community-requested features and the game’s first campaign DLC on the way. Hopefully, the free-to-play phase will boost the game’s numbers ahead of the release of the Worldslayer DLC, and encourage People Can Fly to keep improving the game based on player feedback.

Outriders can be played on a PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Worldslayer expansion will be available on June 30th.
