High On Life, a sci-fi first-person shooter game developed by Squanch Games has become the most popular game on Xbox Game Pass. Released on December 13th on the platform, High on Life has reached record-breaking levels of engagement, with Microsoft claiming it is the biggest Game Pass release of 2022 and the biggest third-party launch in Game Pass history.
High On Life has made a huge impact since its launch just one week ago and managed to take the number one spot as the most popular game on Xbox Game Pass. According to Twitter user Benji-Sales, High on Life is currently the “Most Popular” game on the platform, beating out games like Minecraft and Forza Horizon 5.
The comedic sci-fi shooter was not highly anticipated before its release, but it has proven to be a hit with fans and is available to play at no extra cost through Game Pass. High on Life has also climbed to the top of the TrueAchievements Gameplay Chart of popular Xbox games and is in the top three of the most-played games on Xbox, sitting just below Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Fortnite.
The game was met with mixed reviews from critics, with the average score on OpenCritic sitting at 69/100. However, player reception has been mostly positive, with a user score of 7.8 on Metacritic. High On Life is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC as part of the Game Pass and PC Game Pass subscriptions, both of which cost $9.99 a month.
The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription is available for $14.99 a month and gives access to the PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass libraries, EA Play on both console and PC, and the Xbox Live Gold membership. This Ultimate package has allowed High On Life to stand out and set records in the gaming industry, with its success likely attributed to its creator Justin Roiland’s work on Rick and Morty, which comes with a built-in audience.
High On Life has proven to be a solid first-person shooter/adventure game. Critics have praised the action and boss fights, noting that the game is entertaining and fun. Although some have argued that High On Life doesn’t reinvent the wheel and some elements lack refinement, the game still offers an enjoyable experience. Furthermore, with Xbox Game Pass subscribers having no risk of a financial loss if they don’t like the game, High On Life is an attractive pick-up.
