DualSense Edge PS5 Controller Will Have ‘Moderately Shorter’ Battery Life

Sony’s new DualSense Edge PS5 controller has been met with excitement by gamers, but unfortunately, this premium gamepad has a moderately shorter battery life than the original DualSense controller. Sony has included many new features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller, a decision which has resulted in a battery that is not able to last as long.

The standard DualSense controller averages between five to eight hours of battery life in my experience, depending on the game you’re playing. While Sony hasn’t specified exactly how much less charge the DualSense Edge has compared to the original, we can assume it’ll be somewhere between 5 and 12 hours. This is especially disappointing considering the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 has a whopping 40 hours of battery life.

The DualSense Edge still comes with a host of features, including button remapping, the ability to fine-tune stick sensitivity and triggers, options to swap between multiple control profiles, and a unique on-controller user interface. It also offers standard, high dome, or low dome stick caps, as well as half dome back buttons, and lever back buttons. These features allow users to customize their controllers to suit their playstyle and improve its longevity.

To save battery life on the DualSense Edge, Sony recommends ensuring the latest DualSense update is installed, connecting the controller with a USB-C cable and updating it, and reducing controller functions that use a battery. Additionally, the company is providing a longer USB braided cable for a wired connection to the PS5 console if players need to preserve battery life.

Overall, while the DualSense Edge is still a great controller with a host of features and customization options, the news of its moderately shorter battery life is certainly unwelcome.

Sony’s DualSense Edge PS5 controller will arrive on January 26 with a price tag of $199.
